Unpaid Meal Policy

This policy will be formally approved by the school board at the October 15, 2019 school board meeting.

Dear Parents / Guardians,

The goal of the school meal programs is to provide nutritious meals to children during the school day. Children may receive breakfast and lunch at no cost to them if they are categorically eligible for free meals or if they qualify for free meals based on federal poverty guidelines. Sometimes, however, children who do not qualify based on these standards would like a breakfast or lunch, but do not have money in their account or in-hand to cover the cost of the meal at the time of the meal service.

While it is not our intent to allow charges we realize that at times a child's meal account may have insufficient funds to cover the cost of day's meals at time of service. When this happens the charge will be allowed and a meal will be provided. We will not deny a child a meal because of an unpaid balance however no charging of a la carte items or second meals will be allowed.

Communication regarding low balances and charges will be sent directly to parents/guardians via email, US mail or a phone call as required by state legislation.

If a parent/ guardian does not want their child to charge meals when balances are insufficient, a written statement must be provided to the school directing us to deny their child a meal until sufficient funds can be deposited to the account.
