What's Happening

Welcome to the 2024-25 School Year at

North Lake School!

As we enjoy the final days of summer and sunshine, we also prepare for another wonderful year of school at North Lake!

REGISTRATION

Registration for students was held on August 20-21, but if you missed it, please contact Janet Waldron or Tracey Fivecoat at 541-576-2121 during regular business hours. You need to bring your student’s birth certificate for proof of age, and immunization records if you have them. Registering students prior to the first day of school is highly encouraged.

PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS

Our district-sponsored Preschool program for 4-year-olds will meet in the Annex at North Lake School Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12:30-3:30 PM beginning September 10, 2024. Preschool registration is August 20 and 21 at the times listed above. Preschool parents are not required to attend class sessions with their student.

Our 0-3 Mommy and Me early learning program will again be funded by a grant from the Oregon Community Foundation, and will meet for the first time on September 17, 2024 from 10-11:30 AM in the Annex. For the remainder of the year, they will meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month from 10-11:30 AM. There will be a registration form available at the first session, then simply sign in at each meeting. Parents are required to attend class sessions with their children.

Both of our early learning programs are perfect opportunities for preschool-aged children to make friends and learn important readiness skills that will ease the transition to Kindergarten. These programs also allow parents the opportunity to network with other parents which is helpful considering our geographic isolation. Please join us if you can, and help us reach out to those new in the community who may wish to attend.

KINDERGARTEN JUMPSTART

Kindergarten Jumpstart was held held August 19-22 for incoming kindergarten students. If you did not attend Kindergarten Jumpstart and have questions, please ask Mrs. House, Mr. Mitchem or the front office. We would be happy to assist you.

K-6 PROGRAMS

Our elementary core curriculum will be the same this year as it has been the past six years. We are using the new addition of the HMH reading series, and the Engage New York/Eureka Math program. We understand that the Engage New York/Eureka Math series teaches math and math concepts in an unconventional manner, but we will be providing as much assistance to parents as possible. If you still have questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

We will continue to use the Step Up to Writing strategies as the foundation for our K-12 writing curriculum. This year we will look for opportunities to incorporate the Step Up to Writing strategies in other core curriculum areas, as well, such as math, science and social studies.

MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Our master schedule is similar to last year’s with a split the lunch period, and a homeroom class. This allows us to offer more high-interest courses for students, and build in more opportunities for student engagement in school activities.

We have a very active FFA program for high school students and CTE classes for our middle and high school students. We will offer Drama, Culinary Arts, Leadership, Personal Development and several other classes of interest.

ATHLETICS

We encourage students to participate in our sports activities! Football camps for elementary and high school students are taking place the first two weeks in August, and fall sports begin the week of August 14.

NEW STAFF

We welcome several new staff members this year! Ms. Vanessa Pierce will be our new MS/HS math teacher, Mary Renee Baker is our Academic Advisor, Juanita (Nina) Snow will be our third-grade teacher and Patricia (Trish) Cehrs will be working with Tami Dark in the Special Education room as a Teacher On Special Assignment. Monica Mattis is our Business Manager, Jubal Pierson is our Transportation Supervisor, and Barry Anderson will be our Facilities Manager. Mrs. de la Cerna will be the second-grade teacher this year, and Danielle Niehus has moved to MS/HS Language Arts. Our transportation staff is not yet finalized, so we will introduce them to you at a later date! We welcome all to our school community!

NORTH LAKE COMMUNITY SCHOOL NETWORK

The North Lake Community School Network, with the help of many generous donors, is again providing school supplies for all students in K-12. There will only be a few items students will be required to provide, most importantly a backpack and PE shoes to be used exclusively in the gyms. Thank you to the NLCSN and those who so generously support our school each year! We appreciate you!

WE WELCOME YOU!

Mr. Mitchem, Mr. Missel, and I have an open door policy with parents, staff and community members, so please feel free to stop by the school or give us a call if you have questions or concerns. Working together helps make every day a positive day in your child’s educational journey. We invite you to be present and involved in our schools, so please ask how you can participate in or help with special school events. Thank you!

Enjoy the rest of your summer, and we will see you on the first day of school, September 4, 2024!
